About
The Beacon is a district located near downtown Grand Forks that is the future home to three buildings, a 60,000 SF outdoor plaza, public parking, and event space.

The city-owned plaza is an event space that can host events such as markets, trade shows, theater, movie nights, kid’s events, hockey, broomball, basketball, speaking engagements, art, and more.

The three mixed-use buildings will consist of apartments, condos, and over 20,000 SF of commercial space. This unique area will be a complement to current city assets and the community as a whole.

The Beacon will be developed by EPIC Companies in a similar fashion to the popular development The Lights, located in West Fargo, ND.

The Beacon pays tribute to the heart and soul of Grand Forks, the USA’s hockey capital, and the enduring legends of the University of North Dakota (UND) who have etched an illustrious history in the world of hockey, all while illuminating the local community. A “Beacon” signifies a symbol of hope, direction, and inspiration. EPIC Companies specializes in community development, leaving spaces enriched beyond our initial discovery.
Our homage takes the form of The Beacon’s distinguished buildings. First, 1923 represents the dynamic friendship of Ralph and Reggie, pivotal figures in the history of Sioux Hockey. The number 19 signifies 19 Morelli wore as he brought home UND’s inaugural NCAA title, while 23 stands for Engelstad’s UND goalie jersey number. Their profound friendship, rooted in their shared love for hockey and unwavering commitment to UND’s hockey program, is woven into the fabric of the program’s rich history and its deep connection to the Grand Forks community.

Together, they merge into 1923, a beacon of guidance not only in the realm of hockey but also in scholarship, funding for hockey programs, and community development.

The east building Spirit taps into the very heart of the emotions we associate with a community. EPIC Companies shares a strong sense of community spirit, much like Engelstad and Morelli, who continue to make a positive impact through their foundations. This spirit adds an extra layer of greatness to both UND hockey and the Grand Forks community.
